Middle Level Practical and Applied Arts

Pilot Projects

Saskatchewan Learning now requires that students in Grades 7 through 9 complete 150 hours of Practical and Applied Arts (PAA) Survey courses.  Our data shows that Grade 9 students in our system currently take a minimum of 100 hours of PAA programming.

This new requirement is a great opportunity for our Grade 7 and 8 students to experience a total of 50 hours of PAA in addition to Middle Level Career Guidance. We plan to integrate appropriate curricula, school projects, and community initiatives currently available in our elementary schools and to complement PAA programming offered in our high schools. Our goal is to design and pilot a number of 25-hour PAA Survey options to provide flexibility and choice.

This first pilot project was based on the Outdoor Environmental Education Program, Winter Survival.  Modules have been chosen from three Practical and Applied Arts curricula, including Wildlife Management, Communication Production Technology, and Food Studies. One career development module is included. Career Development Resources

Our second pilot is based on the Outdoor Environmental Education Lost in Time program, in combination with science, technology, and career development.  Modules have been chosen from three Practical and Applied Arts curricula, including Wildlife Management, Energy and Mines, and Communication Production Technology.
