Multimedia can stimulate more
than one sense at a time,
and in doing so, may be more attention-getting and attention-holding.

Bring Learning Alive with Multimedia Presentations
Some of the benefits of projects that incorporate
multimedia production for students:
understand
the concepts in greater depth than in traditional writing projects. |
make
connections between facts, ideas, words and pictures |
encourages
self expression and sense of ownership for the student |
organize
and present information using the kind of media from which they usually
receive it |
quality
of student work and level of engagement increase when audience includes
peers, parents and the global community |
active
rather than passive learning environment |
Students realize that effective communication involves both
content and design. In creating a multimedia presentation, students work
with the information from four perspectives: (Smith (1993) as cited in ISTE
research)
Researchers |
Locating information and building knowledge on the topic |
Authors |
Deciding what information is relevant and pulling the pieces together
create meaning |
Designers |
Selecting the media to present the concepts |
Writers |
Create context and structure to present the new knowledge |
Each of the following examples of Multimedia are cognitive tools -
they activate critical thinking and mental functioning
Differentiation
occurs through choice, media, contribution within a collaborative project
and incorporating various pathways for students to learn. Remember: students
can use multimedia to pose questions and create examples, not just culminating
presentations.
