Digital Storytelling

Images and sound can help students capture the mood and expression of their writing.

Digital Storytelling combines the art of telling stories with available multimedia tools, including graphics, audio, video animation, and Web publishing. Think of how students can use digital stories to give voice to their viewpoints, perspectives and experiences. They also provide a way for students to demonstrate the learning in the curriculum area. This is one way that we can help students move beyond the
"bird reports" and move into creating original work that allows them to synthesize their learning.

Creating Books in iPhoto
Fire Safety Book (pdf)

In each of these samples, students planned and wrote their own scripts to accompany the images. The power of children seeing themselves in the classroom literature is engaging and motivating.

Incorporating digital stories like this is an easy process in iPhoto. These projects incorporate 4 strands of the Language Arts curriculum: reading, writing, viewing, and representing. As we work towards increased literacy achievement within our division, we must incorporate all forms of literacy.
